Originally established under Governor-General Sakuma Samata (佐久間左馬太) in 1913 to house forestry officials and visiting dignitaries. Known as the Alishan Forestry Club (阿里山林場俱樂部), this is the oldest surviving cypress building on Alishan, having endured a fire that destroyed two other original buildings on this site in the early 1960s. It was renovated in 1965, when the adjacent bachelor dormitory was rebuilt in reinforced concrete, and the entire complex was renamed Alishan Hotel. Room 701 has hosted every ROC president from Chiang Kai-shek to Chen Shui-bian. The original wooden building operates as a local cultural museum, 1913 Alishan Old Stories (1913阿里山舊事所), since 2018. A modern hotel wing was added in 2012.
