Baroque Revival Architecture

Baroque Revival, also known as Neo-Baroque, emerged in the late 19th century as a reinterpretation of Baroque design principles, particularly in France and Germany. Decades later it was imported to Taiwan via Japan, where it evolved to reflect local cultural and aesthetic sensibilities.

In Taiwan, Baroque Revival elements were often integrated into traditional shophouse façades, blending ornate European-inspired detailing with traditional Taiwanese symbols and motifs. The style was also applied to institutional and civic buildings, resulting in a distinctive architectural vernacular that is sadly underappreciated outside Taiwan.
