East District (東區) is one of the core administrative areas of Tainan City, encompassing the eastern portion of the historic city center and extending beyond the old city walls. The district preserves several remnants of Qing dynasty fortifications, including the East Gate, Xunfang Fort, and the relocated Minor West Gate, testimony to Tainan’s strategic importance as the capital of Taiwan during much of the Qing era. Beginning in the 1860s the district became a center of Presbyterian missionary activity, with institutions such as the Tainan Theological Seminary, Presbyterian Junior High School, and Presbyterian Girls’ School establishing a lasting Christian influence that continues to the present day. The Japanese colonial period brought further development with the construction of administrative residences, expanded educational facilities, and the completion of the second-generation Tainan Railway Station in 1936. The district also contains numerous temples with deep historical roots, including Longshan Temple, established in 1715, and Mituo Temple which dates back to the Ming-Zheng era.
