Although the exact date of construction is unknown, this old residence and shophouse on the main street of the old north gate district of Hsinchu was standing by 1880, going by an inscription on a pillar inside. Zhou Minyi (周敏益) bought it from the Li family in 1923 and renovated the façade in a Baroque Revival style, completed in 1926, during the Japanese colonial era.
