The first lighthouse on Qihoushan (旗後山) was a square red brick tower built in 1883 by a British engineer to guide ships into Takao Harbour, which had opened to foreign trade two decades earlier; only its base survives, just north of the present tower here at the north end of Qijin Island, Kaohsiung. The Japanese replaced it from 1916 to 1918 during the expansion of the harbour, building an octagonal white brick tower that rounds into a cylinder at the top, fronted by a Baroque-style office. It remains in operation and shares the hill with Qihou Fort. Nowadays it also known more generally as Kaohsiung Lighthouse (高雄燈塔).
