Línnèi (林內) is a rural township at the northeastern edge of Yunlin, where the Jianan Plain meets the foothills along the Zhoushui River. Its name, meaning “within the forest”, records the dense woodland cleared by Hokkien settlers during the Kangxi era. Japanese colonial industry left several visible marks: the Taiwan Mitsubishi Paper Mill Office, built in 1911 and now a restored heritage building, and the Zhoushui Hydroelectric Power Station, completed in 1923 as one of the few hydroelectric plants on the western plains. Tobacco was once widely cultivated here, and old tobacco barns can still be found in the hinterland.
