Rén’ài (仁愛) is a mountain Indigenous township covering the remote northeastern third of Nantou, with its administrative center at Wushe (霧社) at approximately 1,200 meters elevation. The township is primarily home to Seediq Indigenous communities, along with Tayal and Bunun villages, and is the site of the Wushe Incident of 1930, commemorated at Mona Rudao Memorial Park. Wujie Dam and its associated tunnels are key components of the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric system. The Qingjing (清境) area, settled in the 1950s by Yunnan soldiers and Dai families relocated from the Burma border, has since become one of Taiwan’s most-visited mountain destinations alongside Héhuānshān, over which the highest paved road in the country runs.
