Zhōngliáo (中寮) is a rugged, predominantly agricultural township in central Nantou, where nearly 98% of the terrain is hillside. Banana cultivation has long been the economic backbone, a light railway once transported this cash crop to Nantou City. The Zhongliao Line (中寮線), built in 1938 to carry sugarcane and passengers, was abolished in the 1960s, though its two former tunnels survive.
