Initially established as Wushe Incident Memorial Park (霧社事件紀念公園) in 1952, it represented an interest in aligning Taiwanese Indigenous resistance to Japanese rule with the new governing authority’s own nation-building project. In 1973 the remains of Mona Rudao (莫那魯道), leader of the Wushe Incident, were moved to the park, and more recently the entire park was renamed in his honor.
