Lùgǔ (鹿谷) is a mountainous township in southwestern Nantou, formerly known as Qiangziliao (羌仔寮) after the Formosan serow that once inhabited the area. Most of the land is national forestland or NTU Experimental Forest, and the township is the origin of Dongding oolong (凍頂烏龍茶), one of Taiwan’s best-known teas. The Wannian Hengqu Inscription, carved into a mountainside boulder, is one of several Qing dynasty stone inscriptions along the Batongguan Old Trail in the area.
