Discovered in 1980 by Academia Sinica archaeologist Chen Zhongyu (陳仲玉), this site on a river terrace in Ren’ai, Nantou, is the only intact prehistoric mountain settlement thus far excavated in Taiwan and dates to the middle and late Neolithic period. The dig followed an earlier 1935 stone-axe find by Japanese ethnologist Mabuchi Tōichi. Designated a third-grade monument in 1988 and upgraded to a national archaeological site in May 2019, the excavation areas are now back-filled with the recovered artifacts held at Academia Sinica. The site itself is marked by a modest sign and chain-link fencing.
