Chiayi Jiayunnan Theater

Jiayunnan Theater (嘉雲南戲院) was a two-screen theater in Chiayi City operating out of the mid-levels of Jianan Commercial Building (嘉南商業大樓) from 1981 until around 1993. The same building once housed Far East Department Store (遠東百貨), a revolving restaurant on the rooftop, an ice skating rink, a cram school, various restaurants, and other shops¹. The department store relocated to a new building in December 1991 and foot traffic to the aging commercial complex declined, eventually leading to the theater’s closure.

The building remains idle owing to complex property ownership despite its prime location in the city center. Although little has been done to refurbish much of the structure the theater itself was gutted in the mid-2010s, presumably to ready it for rental and redevelopment. Nothing more remains of the interior as of the 2020s.
