Taiwan’s first museum dedicated to the preservation of decorative ceramic tiles (花磚), housed in a 1938 two-storey mansion originally built for the Tainan-born timber merchant Su Yourang (蘇友讓) as headquarters of Defeng Timber Company (德豐材木商行). Su modeled the building after the Governor-General’s Office in Taipei, reflecting his stature as one of the highest-grossing Taiwanese timber dealers of the era. The timber industry declined after the war and the building passed through several owners before Xu Jiabin (徐嘉彬), a tech industry worker who had spent 20 years salvaging tiles from demolition sites across Taiwan, purchased it in 2015. After two years of restoration the museum opened in late 2017, exhibiting some 1,500 tiles alongside period furniture and antiques adorned with tile work. It is a modest attraction but one well-worth visiting when passing through Chiayi City.
