Chiayi Huanan Theater (嘉義華南戲院) - Spectral Codex

Huanan Theater (華南戲院) began operating in central Chiayi City in 1954. It caught the early wave of Taiwanese language films, before the industry withered under the pressure of language policies under martial law. The theater finally succumbed to changing times in 1993 and closed its doors forever.

Huanan Theater later became a branch of the Wellcome supermarket chain.

Eventually the old theater was converted into a supermarket, initially operating as a branch of the Wellcome (頂好超市) chain, and later Carrefour Market (家樂福超市). By 2024 the supermarket has also shut down, the signs were removed, and in September the building was dismantled altogether. Netizens observing the demolition noticed, with regret, that the inner walls still displayed the original 1950s decorations.
