Originally the Church of St. Michael (聖彌厄爾堂), this chapel was a branch of the Yilan Redeemer Church (宜蘭市救主堂). The Redemptorists arrived in Taiwan from Europe in 1959 under Wang Junde (王俊德) and the following year took over Catholic mission work across Yilan City, Yuanshan, and Zhuangwei. Wang purchased land in Jinshi Village (進士里) and built the chapel in 1962, where the congregation also operated Shenghou Kindergarten (聖后幼稚園). The church has since been deconsecrated, and the building was designated a county historic building in 2002.
