A former civilian airfield built in 1936 on the outskirts of Yilan City. In the later stages of World War 2 it was expropriated by the Japanese military and converted for use as a military airfield. Two addition airfields were constructed to the south and west in 1943 and 1944; the remains of Yilan South Airfield are still scattered across the countryside. During the final stage of World War 2 all three served as bases for kamikaze special attack units; 62 aircraft departed from Yilan on suicide missions between April and June 1945. In the post-war era this airfield was converted into Jinliujie Military Training Center (金六結新兵訓練中心). Several relics remain scattered around the site, including a weather station, a machine shop, and several reinforced concrete aircraft hangars. Collectively known as Giran Airfield (宜蘭機場) in the Japanese colonial period.
