The first Confucian temple in Yilan was founded in 1865 by local degree-holders and built out over the following decade on a layout modeled after Tainan Confucian Temple. Requisitioned as a garrison hospital under Japanese rule and bombed during World War 2 while serving as a grain store, it was left in ruins in the early post-war period and eventually demolished. The present temple was rebuilt on the north side of the city in 1953 at a much reduced scale, completed in stages over the following decades and listed as a historic building in 2021. It continues to host annual rites on September 28th.
