Constructed in 1943 as an extension of the existing Yilan North Airfield (宜蘭北機場), established in 1936 as a civilian airport. This airfield was a major base for kamikaze special attack units during the final stage of World War 2; 62 aircraft departed from Yilan on suicide missions between April and June 1945. In the post-war era it was dismantled and later redeveloped into a science park. Several fortifications survive around the site, including gun towers, an octagonal control tower, numerous reinforced concrete aircraft hangars, and a pair of oil tanks.
