Xiyu Ammunition Magazine (西嶼彈藥本庫) - Spectral Codex
西嶼彈藥本庫

A cluster of ammunition bunkers tunneled into the hillside in Xiyu. Construction began in 1900 as part of the Penghu Island Fortress (澎湖島要塞), the Japanese imperial defensive scheme that ringed the archipelago with twelve coastal batteries served by five centralized magazines. The complex includes single and double-chambered dry magazines built for storing smokeless powder, lined with copper sheeting for electromagnetic and moisture isolation, alongside an above-ground cool magazine of stone and timber. Taken over by the ROC military as the Niuxinwan Ammunition Depot (牛心灣彈藥集積所) in 1945, the site was decommissioned and eventually opened to the public in 2021 as the Xiyu Ammunition Magazine Military Cultural Park (西嶼彈藥本庫軍事文化園區). It was upgraded from county-level to national monument status in 2024.
