西嶼

Xiyu

Xiyu (西嶼), historically known as Yuwengdao (漁翁島), comprises the second largest island in Penghu and the islet of Xiaomen (小門). It is linked to Baisha by the Penghu Great Bridge; the piers of its 1970 predecessor, the Old Penghu Great Bridge, still stand in the strait. Guarding the western approach to Magong harbour, the island carries layers of fortification, from the Qing dynasty batteries of Xiyu West Fort and Xiyu East Fort to the Japanese hilltop position at Wangwu Military Base. Yuwengdao Lighthouse stands on the site of the first lighthouse in Taiwan and Penghu, established in 1778.
