Xiyu Dongbitou Shinyo Base

Remains of several shinyo (suicide boat) tunnels can be found somewhere along this windswept cape. The exact location is unclear and requires further investigation. Xiyu, then known as Yuwengdao (漁翁島), held one of two bases in Penghu, the other being Yuanyangku on Wang’an. The 25th squadron (第25震洋隊) was based, conscripting villagers to excavate three interconnected tunnels, each approximately 30 meters deep, and construct wooden barracks, a medical room, and a communications station. The squadron was relocated to Keelung from March to June 1945, but construction resumed under the oversight of the 24th squadron (第24震洋隊) in late July, approximately a month prior to the Japanese surrender.
