The last walled city built by the Qing dynasty in Taiwan, constructed next to the harbor of what is now Magong between 1887 and 1889 in response to the brief French occupation of Penghu during the Sino-French War. Construction was overseen by Wu Honglo (吳宏洛), the first commander of the upgraded Penghu Naval Garrison, with coral and basalt walls, six gates, and a moat along the northern perimeter. Most of these fortifications were demolished in stages under Japanese colonial rule leaving mainly the Shuncheng Gate (順承門) in the former military restricted zone on the western side of town.
