Exploring an old air raid shelter in the hills of Xinyi.
Behind the entrance to the former Stanton Club is a U-shaped air raid shelter carved into the hillside. The shelter is lined with stone benches. Not too much is known about when or why it was built, but it might have something to do with the nearby military training facility, or perhaps the history of coal mining in the area. One entrance is typically used for storage and sealed but the other is often open. Watch out for bats should you visit!
Stone benches line the interior of the shelter.
Bats roost in the darkness beyond the bend.
The second entrance was often sealed in the late 2010s.
I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
