Fúxīng (福興) is an administrative oddity in northwestern Changhua, with its northern border gerrymandering through the southern part of Lukang, placing the township’s urban center at its edge. Originally Babuza territory settled by Fujianese immigrants who arrived via the ports of Lukang and Wanggong, the township has a population of approximately 45,000, and is renowned for having Taiwan’s highest density of dairy farming. Notable sites include the extraordinary Sanqing Sanyuan Temple, an idiosyncratic “shell temple” constructed over two decades by a single man following divine dreams, and the remnants of the World War 2 Waipu Airfield with gun towers built in 1943.
