North District (北區) sprawls along the northern perimeter of Taichung City’s historic center, anchored by Taichung Park (臺中公園), the city’s oldest public park. Taichung Park Pavilion (湖心亭), a municipal monument built in 1908 to commemorate the completion of the island’s main trunk railway line, is the park’s most recognizable feature, while the Provincial Capital North Gate (臺灣省城大北門), relocated here in 1903, is a remnant of the aborted Qing dynasty era attempt to build Taiwan City in this area. Taichung Broadcasting Station (臺中放送局), a heritage-listed radio facility completed in 1935, and the accompanying radio tower (擴音台) in Taichung Park document the early history of public broadcasting in central Taiwan. Taichung Confucian Temple (臺中市孔廟), completed in 1976, occupies the former site of the Taichung Shinto Shrine (臺中神社).
