Completed in 1937 as the auditorium of Taichung First Junior High School (臺中州立臺中第一中學校), a Japanese colonial era institution founded in 1915. The brick and reinforced concrete hall served as an assembly space for students and staff, and housed a hōanko (奉安庫), a ceremonial safe containing the Imperial Rescript on Education and the emperor’s portrait. After the war it was rechristened a ceremonial hall, renovated in 1995, and repurposed as the school history museum (校史館). It was registered as a historic building in 2004 in recognition of its status as the sole surviving remnant of the first educational institution founded by Taiwanese elites on the island. It now sits on the campus of Taichung First Senior High School and is not ordinarily open to the public.
