The first Shinto shrine in Taichung, built on the north side of Taichung Park (台中公園) in Shintaka-chō (新高町) and inaugurated on October 27, 1912. Ranked as a prefectural shrine (縣社) from 1913, it was designed by Nagoya craftsman Itō Mitsusaku (伊藤滿作) in the shinmei-zukuri (神明造) style using Japanese and Taiwanese hinoki. When the second-generation Taichung Shinto shrine was completed in 1940 the wooden structures were dismantled. Remnants including a stone platform, a pair of bronze horses, stone lions, a stone bridge, a toppled torii (鳥居), and eight pairs of stone lanterns survive in the park, though some have been vandalized in recent years.
