Established around 1949 in buildings leftover by the Japanese military, which had operated a medical station for the Imperial Japanese Navy’s 13th Air Group (第十三航空隊) in the area. It is also known as Zhongyi Military Village (忠義眷村) or Zhongyi Community (忠義社區) after Zhongyi Village (忠義里), the administrative village in which it sits, but the official name may have been Gongguan New Village (公館新村). It was registered with 97 households but the scope of the village became much larger as people flooded in to support both Ching Chuan Kang Air Base (清泉崗空軍基地) to the north and the army barracks to the south. There has been considerable turnover in the village and it is now a much more mixed community, with Hoklo, Indigenous, and new immigrant households living alongside the families of mainland Chinese servicemen who first settled here. There was also a movie theater in the area, but it is behind the walls of the army base immediately to the south and is not open to the general public. A short section of the Shengang branch line (神岡支線), a military railway that carried tanks and supplies to the airbase, survives in nearby Liubao Park (六寶公園).
