Zheng Yongxi Residence

Established in 1838, this is the ancestral home of Zheng Yongxi (鄭用錫), Taiwan’s first imperial scholar, hence the plaque reading jinshidi (進士第) over the entrance. It stands outside the old north gate of Hsinchu in a row of Zheng family buildings that includes Jilidi and the family temple, and follows the style of houses in Kinmen, where the family originated. It lost its rear hall to American bombing in January 1945 and was in seriously rough condition heading into the 2010s, but a comprehensive restoration project was completed in 2023.
