Founded in 1781 to continue the operations of Taishan Mingzhi Academy after the sub-prefectural seat was moved to Zhuqian, now known as Hsinchu. The new branch eclipsed the original to become known as the “foremost academy of northern Taiwan” (北臺首學), with Taiwan’s first native-born jinshi, Zheng Yongxi (鄭用錫), among its lecturers. The building was demolished in 1895 to make way for what is now Xida Road (西大路) during an early Japanese colonial era urban planning project. The original site lies at the western terminus of Wenchang Road (文昌路) where Mingzhi Academy Parking Lot (明志書院停車場) was constructed in 2001.
