Hsinchu East Gate

Built in 1826 and formally known as Yingximen (迎曦門), this is the eastern gate to the old city of Hsinchu, then known as Zhuqian City (竹塹城). It was part of a campaign led by Zheng Yongxi and other gentry to replace the earlier defences with walls of brick and stone, and it alone survived when the Japanese colonial government demolished the walls and the other three gates from 1902. Located in a traffic circle, it is readily accessible from pedestrian underpasses on either side.
