A historic Mazu temple at the former north gate to Hsinchu, founded in 1742 on land donated by the family of the pioneer settler Wang Shijie (王世傑) and long the meeting place of the merchant guilds trading through the port. Because it was located outside of the city walls it is sometimes referred to as the Outer Mazu Temple (外媽祖宮), in contrast to Neitianhou Temple within them. Immediately next door is Hsinchu Shuixian Temple.
