The top-ranking Catholic church in the Hsinchu Diocese, completed in 1957 and informally known as Beida Church (北大教堂) after the road it is on. It was planned by Eugene Fahy, a Jesuit expelled from China in 1951, and resembles the cathedral in Yangzhou where he had been apostolic prefect. The site was previously occupied by a detachment of the Japanese military police and was bombed by American aircraft in January 1945.
