Imperial Scholars in Taiwan

The imperial examination system served as the primary path to bureaucratic office in imperial China, with the prestigious rank of jinshi (進士) representing its highest achievement. During the Qing dynasty’s rule over Taiwan, approximately 35 individuals from the island attained this coveted status. The Japanese invasion of 1895 marked the end of this tradition, but numerous historical sites and artifacts preserve the legacy of these accomplished scholars across Taiwan.
