This temple venerates Wenchang Dijun (文昌帝君), the god of literature and examinations. Local gentry founded it in 1867 on a site inside the walls of Taoyuan Old City under the name Jia’ao Tower (駕鰲樓). Among the promoters was the Daxi juren Li Teng-fang (李騰芳). The colonial government opened a Japanese language school (臺北國語傳習所桃仔園分教場) in the temple in 1897, and the park laid out alongside in 1909 took the temple’s name. The main hall was rededicated to Confucius in 1968 and it served as the city’s Confucian temple until 1988, when the management committee moved to the new Confucian Temple at Hutoushan (虎頭山). Residents repaired the neglected building, reinstalled the deities, and registered it under its present name in 1991.
