An old school in Hsinchu tracing its roots back to a Japanese language institute founded in 1896 at Hsinchu Mingzhi Academy (竹塹明志書院), which was located near the west gate to the former walled city. It moved into the Confucian temple in 1906 and was relocated to its present site in 1937, around when the Bailing Building (百齡樓), recognized as a city monument, was constructed. It remains an active school and the grounds are not generally open during class hours.
