Hsinchu Public Hall

Completed in 1921 with funds raised by local gentry and the government of the Japanese colonial era, this large assembly hall in central Hsinchu was damaged by American bombing in May 1945 and repaired two years later with an altered roofline. It served for decades as a social education hall and survived a 1994 plan to replace it with a commercial tower. Since reopening in 2022 after a long (and somewhat controversial) restoration it now operates as the National Hsinchu Living Arts Center (國立新竹生活美學館).
