Founded in 1898 as the first public secondary school in Taiwan under Japanese colonial administration, initially under the auspices of the Governor-General’s National Language School system. The campus moved to its current site on Nanhai Road in 1909, and the red brick schoolhouse (建國中學紅樓) built there at the time, designed by Governor-General architect Kondō Jūrō (近藤十郎), is now protected as a municipal monument. Through most of the colonial era the institution operated as Taipei First Middle School (臺北第一中學校), initially admitting only Japanese students until the 1919 Taiwan Education Decree opened enrolment to Taiwanese children. The school was renamed Chien Kuo Middle School (建國中學) in 1946 and received its present name when Taipei was upgraded to a direct-administration municipality in 1967. It remains a boys-only institution and consistently ranks as one of the most selective high schools in Taiwan.
