Originally established as Yuheng Temple (苗栗玉衡宮) in Touwu in the early 1900s. During the Japanese colonial era traditional Taiwanese folk religion was suppressed, and this temple worked around restrictions by rebranding as Xiangshan Academy (象山書院), a center of study. After the war the temple reverted to venerating Guanyin and other gods, but by 1975, with some interest from county officials, the old hall of the temple began to honor Confucius again.
