Founded in 1959 by the monk Shengyin (聖印法師) on land donated by a disciple, this is the head temple of the Wanfoshan School (萬佛山派), one of nine Buddhist traditions native to Taiwan. A lecture hall was dedicated in January 1961 and a main shrine hall followed the next year. Shengyin went on to establish Wanfo Temple in Wufeng in 1971, along with branch temples in Taipei, Kaohsiung, and New Zealand.

The Guanyin statue standing out front was built in 1964, its two-storey base originally given over to a nursery and a library. It now stands above Yuantong Hall (圓通寶殿), finished in 1970, a chamber built without interior columns and lined with more than three thousand bodhisattva images. Hemmed in by the surrounding city, the older dormitories were demolished in 1987 and replaced by a seven-storey building completed in October 1991.
