Public Halls in Taiwan

During the Japanese colonial era, towns and districts across Taiwan built public halls or kōkaidō (公會堂) for meetings, lectures, exhibitions, and performances, while villages and hokō (保甲) units constructed simpler assembly halls (集會所). After the war most were renamed Zhongshan Hall (中山堂) in honour of Sun Yat-sen, and many were taken over by the Kuomintang, leased out as theaters, or demolished. About a dozen survive, most restored as heritage sites.
