Completed in 1916, this impressive Western-style government office was the administrative center of Tainan Prefecture. It was heavily damaged during US bombing toward the end of World War 2 and lay in ruins for several years before it was repaired and handed over to ROCAF logistics for use as an office. In 1969 it was transferred to local government for use as Tainan City Hall. A large-scale restoration project got under way in 1997, refurbishing the building and converted it into the National Museum of Taiwan Literature (國立臺灣文學館), open to the public since 2003.
