Originally established in 1721 as a Linji Zen Buddhist temple, it is one of the seven temples and eight shrines (七寺八廟) of historic Tainan. It was heavily damaged during US air raids on Tainan during World War 2 and rebuilt in the post-war period. Nowadays it operates as a Tibetan Kagyu Buddhist monastery. Designated as a historic building in 2007, the temple also houses deities from the demolished Nanxing Hall (南星殿), as well as a unique “vinegar jar” (醋矸) ritual.
