The Taichung Prefecture Hall (臺中州廳) stands on the former site of a Qing dynasty era administrative complex, that last vestiges of which can now be found at the recently restored Taiwan Prefecture Examination Hall. This French Mansard-style government building was designed by Moriyama Matsunosuke (森山松之助) and constructed in five phases from 1913 to 1934. It served as the administrative center of Taichung Prefecture during the Japanese era, then became the Taichung City Government headquarters until 2010. Designated a municipal monument in 2006 and upgraded to a national monument in 2019, it has been undergoing restoration since 2019 with its future use still undecided.
