Dongshi (東石) is a coastal township in southwestern Chiayi County and Taiwan’s largest oyster-producing area, supplying an estimated 70% of the national harvest. The Waisanding Sandbar (外傘頂洲) shelters the shallow waters where oyster farming has flourished for centrueis, though the sandbar is shrinking and may disappear within the decade. Dongshi is also home to Fu’an Temple, which venerates Yi’aigong (義愛公), a deified Japanese colonial era police officer named Morikawa Seijiro. This faith has spread to Chiayi City and other parts of the country due to ongoing outmigration.
