Dongshi Dafu Theater (東石大福戲院) - Spectral Codex
東石大福戲院

A rural theater on the edge of Sanjia Village (三家村) in coastal Chiayi. It was established by Cai Juwan (蔡居萬) in the 1960s and hosted glove puppetry, traditional opera, and other performances before screening films more regularly. It briefly closed before reopening as Tianyuan Theater (天源戲院), which had a renewed focus on song and dance troupes and eventually striptease shows (牛肉場). At some point it was renamed Xintianyuan Theater (新天源戲院), perhaps after law enforcement forced the previous business to close. Finally it shut down for good around 1980, though the owner continued to host performances in front of his residence, operating under the name Xingwang Open-Air Theater (刑王露天戲院), until the early 1990s. Apart from the official name this theater has also been known as Sanfu Theater (三福戲院) and Sanjia Theater (三家戲院), after the name of the village.
