Fanlu (番路) is a rural township in Chiayi County named for its position on the historic route to Tsou villages in Alishan. The village of Chukou (觸口) at the valley entrance where the Bazhang River exits the highlands served as a Qing dynasty era frontier outpost for trade between Han settlers and Indigenous communities. Bantianyan Ziyun Temple traces its roots to 1765, though earthquakes have repeatedly damaged the structure over the centuries.
