Shuishang (水上) is a rural township in Chiayi County and home to Chiayi Airport. The airport saw some of the most violent events of the 228 Incident in March 1947, when local militias besieged KMT forces leading to over 300 casualties; negotiators including painter Chen Cheng-po (陳澄波) were arrested and executed. The Tropic of Cancer monument marks the latitude line passing through the township, while the Nanjing Sugar Factory preserves remnants of the Japanese colonial era sugar industry.
