Dongshi in coastal Chiayi was developed as a salt production area early in the Japanese colonial era. Several operations were developed west of Zhangtan Village (掌潭村) and around Wangliao (網寮) and Baishuihu (白水湖). In the post-war era all salt fields in the area were absorbed into Budai Saltworks as the 1st Production Area (第一生產區), 2nd Production Area (第二生產區), and 3rd Production Area (第三生產區). Few traces remain of any of these operations, particularly since the Shoudao Saltworks Office (壽島場務所) collapsed into rubble in the late 2010s.

In operation from 1921 until 2001, making it one of the last traditional salt fields operating in Taiwan. In the post-war era it was absorbed into Budai Saltworks as part of the 2nd Production Area (第二生產區).
- Salt Police Dormitories (塩警宿舍)—Vanished (已消失)
Old maps indicate this site once held dormitories for the salt police (and presumably a watchtower). Nothing is known to remain.
- Salt Warehouse (塩納屋)—Vanished (已消失)
A former saltworks collection area. Two abandoned structures stood on this site until the early 2010s but were subsequently demolished. Its precise identity is unknown.
- Shoudao Saltworks Office (布袋鹽場壽島場務所)—Vanished (已消失)
The former saltworks office for the 3rd Production Area (第三生產區) of Budai Saltworks. It was abandoned for many years and finally collapsed in the late 2010s.
- Taiwan Salt Company No. 3 New Village (台鹽第三新村)—Idle (閒置)
A set of salt worker dormitories marked on maps and seemingly still standing, although most (if not all) units have been abandoned.
