Dongshi in coastal Chiayi was developed as a salt production area early in the Japanese colonial era. Several operations were developed west of Zhangtan Village (掌潭村) and around Wangliao (網寮) and Baishuihu (白水湖). In the post-war era all salt fields in the area were absorbed into Budai Saltworks as the No. 1 Production Area (第一生產區), No. 2 Production Area (第二生產區), and No. 3 Production Area (第三生產區). Few traces remain of any of these operations, particularly since the Shoudao Saltworks Office (壽島場務所) collapsed into rubble in the late 2010s.
