White Terror in Taiwan

The White Terror (白色恐怖) refers to the period of political persecution carried out under martial law by the Kuomintang (KMT) regime, beginning with the imposition of martial law in 1949 and extending until the repeal of the sedition provisions of Article 100 of the Criminal Code in 1992. It was a direct consequence of the political violence of the 228 Incident in 1947. Tens of thousands of Taiwanese were imprisoned, tortured, or executed on charges of communist sympathies, Taiwanese independence advocacy, or other forms of political dissent. This theme documents surviving sites of persecution and transitional justice, including detention centers, military courts, execution grounds, and the memorials now overseen by the National Human Rights Museum (國家人權博物館).
